Healthy Cleaning

I was scouring my sink and stove this morning with Shaklee Get Clean's Scour Off while holding my 9-month-old, and it got me thinking. There's no way I'd let my daughter be this close if I was using other cleaning products.

Other cleaning products can contain ammonia, butyl cellosolve, formaldehyde, hydrochloric acid, and phenols just to name a few. Some of the dangers include irritants, carcinogens, and reproductive damage not to mention an increase in respiratory problems such as asthma. People, we are "cleaning" with these! Our kids are playing in rooms where we're using these, and we're eating and preparing food off surfaces which have had these chemicals on them.

Don't just take my word for it. Check out some common cleaning products at the Household Products Database at the National Institutes of Health (http://hpd.nlm.nih.gov/).

And these are just some of the known dangers. As Sloan Barnett says in her book, Green Goes with Everything, "The fact is that the government has no idea whether most of the chemicals used in everyday cleaning products are safe because it doesn't test them, and it doesn't require manufacturers to test them either.

So do yourself and your family a favor. Opt for safe and healthy cleaning products that are not only safe for you, but good for the environment as well. I LOVE LOVE LOVE Shaklee's Get Clean line. On top of the health benefits, it's also easy on your pocketbook. Check it out.
